Here’s the theatrical trailer for Chasing Mavericks. Directed by Curtis Hanson, the film stars Gerard Butler as mentor to Moriarty (played by newcomer Jonny Weston), a soul surfer who made his name on the waves over Mavericks in Northern California.

The first poster from the surfer film Chasing Mavericks (previously titled Of Men and Mavericks) has landed online.  Directed by Curtis Hanson, the film stars Gerard Butler as mentor to Moriarty (played by newcomer Jonny Weston), a soul surfer who made his name on the waves over Mavericks in Northern California.

Michael Apted to finish directing duties on Of Men and Mavericks

After experiencing health complications from a recent heart surgery, director Curtis Hanson is getting help to finish the principal photography on Of Men and Mavericks, the Walden Media drama about big wave surfer Jay Moriarity.

Michael Apted (Amazing Grace, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader) is going to step in and complete the final 15 days of principal photography for Hanson, starting on Monday. They are shooting in Northern California, where Moriarity became known for riding treacherous waves called Mavericks. The film stars Gerard Butler, with newcomer Jonny Weston playing Moriarity. Walden Media films ‘Parental Guidance’ and ‘Of Men and Mavericks’ get release dates

Two of the films from Walden Media that are coming out next year have just gotten release dates.

Formerly titled Us & Them, Parental Guidance stars Billy Crystal and Bette Midler as grandparents who struggle to cope with their grandkids’ modern ways when they’re left to care for them. The duo forge a new bond with their grandkids and set out to repair a long-standing rift with their daughter, Alice, to be played by Marisa Tomei.  It will be released on November 21, 2012.

Surfer Jay Moriarity sets out to ride the Northern California break known as Mavericks. Of Men and Mavericks will detail how Moriarty’s persistence, discipline and potential transform Frosty from a reluctant mentor into a father figure. As their bond strengthens, Moriarty learns to push his limits.  It will be released on October 26, 2012.

Elisabeth Shue, Abigail Spencer join ‘Of Men and Mavericks’

Elisabeth Shue and Abigail Spencer are joining the cast of the surfing drama ‘Of Men and Mavericks.’

Of Men and Mavericks follows a chapter in the real-life story of young Northern Californian Jay Moriarty, a world champion surfer and adventurer who made his reputation surfing Mavericks north of Half Moon Bay before dying in a diving accident at age 22.

Spencer will play the role of Frosty’s wife, while Shue will play Moriarty’s mother.

Surfing film ‘Of Men and Mavericks’ lands a Studio

Walden Media’s film Of Men and Mavericks has landed a studio.  Fox 2000 has joined to co-finance and distribute the film domestically.

Of Men and Mavericks follows a chapter in the real-life story of young Northern Californian Jay Moriarty, a world champion surfer and adventurer who made his reputation surfing Mavericks north of Half Moon Bay before dying in a diving accident at age 22.

Leven Rambin joins cast of ‘Mavericks’

Leven Rambin (“The Hunger Games” “Grey’s Anatomy”) has been cast as the female lead in “Mavericks,” opposite Gerard Butler and Jonny Weston.

Based on the true story of Jay Moriarty’s rise to the forefront of big wave surfing, “Mavericks” will feature Rambin as a California surfer girl who is Moriarty’s best friend and the object of his adoration. Weston will play Moriarty and Butler is portraying Rick “Frosty” Hesson. Moriarity sought to ride the iconic Northern California break known as Mavericks, where winter swells bring in treacherous waves the size of five-story buildings.

Producer of film about Jay Moriarity looking for extras in Santa Cruz

The film, which has yet to be titled, will begin shooting in and around Santa Cruz in the middle of October. And Walden Media, the film’s producer, is looking for Santa Cruzans to take part in it.

The film is reportedly focused on the relationship between young Moriarity and his longtime friend and mentor Frosty Hesson. Scottish-born star Gerard Butler will take on the role of Hesson, and Moriarity will be played by up-and-coming young actor Jonny Weston. The script was written by Brandon Hooper, who himself has a background in surfing.

Several hundred locals will be needed to be extras in the film, a drama about the life of the young surfer who died in 2001 a day before his 23rd birthday.

The film’s cast and crew, led by “L.A. Confidential” and “8 Mile” director Curtis Hanson, will be in town for two weeks beginning Oct. 10.

Jonny Weston lands lead role Jay Moriarty in ‘Mavericks’

While Gerard Butler was announced as the big name in the Curtis Hanson-directed surf movie Mavericks, the lead role all the young actors chased is Jay Moriarty, the teenage big-wave rider who successfully rode Mavericks. That is a body of water in Northern California that became popular with daredevil surfers who braved the structure and rocks to ride waves the size of five-story buildings.

Twenty-two year-old Jonny Weston has been offered and is in negotiations for the lead role of Moriarty in the Walden Media-backed film.

Curtis Hanson to direct ‘Mavericks’

Walden Media has tapped Curtis Hanson to direct surfing drama “Mavericks,” with Brandon Hooper and Jim Meenaghan producing.

The story, based on Hooper’s script, centers on the late Jay Moriarity and his quest to ride the iconic Northern California break known as Mavericks, where winter swells bring in treacherous waves the size of five-story buildings.
