Since the discovery that pounding on a hollow log produced a good beat, humans have been drumming and dancing.

That common rhythmic tradition is apparent in “Pulse: A STOMP Odyssey,” a lively, global feast of toe-tapping percussion that opens tomorrow in Whitaker Center’s IMAX theater.

The 40-minute movie, made in 2002 by the creators of the popular stage show STOMP, traipses from continent to continent, rapidly firing South African harvest dances, American Indian tribal rituals, Winchester Cathedral bell ringers, Spanish flamenco dancers, an Indian elephant parade and Japanese kodo drummers at the audience.

Most of the performers are groups who are dedicated to preserving the rhythmic traditions of their own cultures.

In IMAX format, the visual impact of these open-air performances by highly skilled professionals is extraordinary.

Particularly amazing is a performance on pipes, gas cans and water jugs that takes place beneath the surface of the English Channel.
