Ramona and Beezus is a Terrific Family Movie

July 23rd, 2010 by Paul Martin

Just saw Ramona and Beezus with my mom and fiance, and we had a blast.  It is a terrific family movie with great acting all around.  It doesn’t stray too heavy or too far left field, and really lets you into the mind of Ramona Quimby and her family.  This is a movie that will be fun for the whole family.

The adventures of young Ramona Quimby (newcomer Joey King) and her big sister Beezus (Selena Gomez) come to life in this all new film based on the best-selling books (over 30 million…and counting) by Beverly Cleary.  Ramona’s vivid imagination, boundless energy, and accident-prone antics keep everyone she meets on their toes.  But her irrepressible sense of fun, adventure and mischief come in handy when she puts her mind to helping save her family’s home.

A team of two Asbury University professors and an Asbury University student produced a video interview of Micheal Flaherty, president of Walden Media. The C.S. Lewis Estate has entrusted Walden Media with bringing to life the film adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia. The video will be premiered preceding the release of the third film in the series, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The two previous films produced by Walden Media, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Price Caspian, were highly popular earning $745 million and $419 million respectively worldwide. In the video Flaherty says, he was very proud of the work that has been done so far on the film and is confident that it will recapture the magic that was so much a part of the first film.

The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer

June 17th, 2010 by Paul Martin

Here it is, everyone.  The trailer for 20th Century Fox and Walden Media’s first Narnia project that they’re doing together.  It looks like they are continuing the work that was started with the first two and to stunning effect!  Enjoy the trailer!

The new documentary, Waiting for “Superman”, examines the crisis of public education in the United States through multiple interlocking stories – from a handful of students and their families whose futures hang in the balance, to the educators and reformers trying to find real and lasting solutions within a dysfunctional system.

Watch the trailer for the new documentary and PLEDGE to see the film. Visit walden.com regularly for updates on how you can join the campaign to help students in under-performing schools achieve better educational outcomes.

Walden Media’s going “Cosmic,” signing Frank Cottrell Boyce to adapt his children’s novel for the bigscreen.

Liam has always felt a bit like he’s stuck between two worlds. This is primarily because he’s a twelve-year-old kid who looks like he’s about thirty. Sometimes it’s not so bad, like when his new principal mistakes him for a teacher on the first day of school or when he convinces a car dealer to let him take a Porsche out on a test drive. But mostly it’s just frustrating, being a kid trapped in an adult world. And so he decides to flip things around. Liam cons his way onto the first spaceship to take civilians into space, a special flight for a group of kids and an adult chaperone, and he is going as the adult chaperone. It’s not long before Liam, along with his friends, is stuck between two worlds again—only this time he’s 239,000 miles from home.

Frank Cottrell Boyce, author of Millions and Framed, brings us a funny and touching story of the many ways in which grown-upness is truly wasted on grown-ups.

“Cosmic” is on the shortlist for the U.K. Carnegie Award and is the latest release from Walden Pond Press, a joint venture of Walden Media and HarperCollins.

Besides publishing books for young readers, Walden Pond is set up to pair book properties with filmmakers and actors. It also collaborates on development and production of features.

“In short, the story is ‘Apollo 13′ meets ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,’ so it makes sense that ‘Cosmic’s’ out-of-this-world adventure would include a journey to the movie theater,” said Francis X. Flaherty Jr., publisher of Walden Pond.

Walden’s Evan Turner will oversee the project with Walden topper Michael Bostick.

Montecito, Walden Media and Paramount are going on a “Field Trip.”   Montecito, run by Ivan Reitman, Tom Pollock and Joe Medjuck, has dipped into its discretionary fund to pick up a sci-fi-tinged adventure comedy pitch from Jordan Cahan.

The logline is being kept hidden in a locker, but the story is known to involve time travel, a high school teacher and his students.

The Montecito principals will produce with Greg Lessans.

New Line and Walden Media are putting together the sequel to Journey to the Center of The Earth, and sources said that Brendan Fraser is definitely teetering. The reason: the studio wants to make a fall, 2011 release date which would mean hiring another director to replace Eric Brevig, who’s busy with another Warner Bros 3D film, Yogi Bear.

Fraser wants to be loyal to Brevig and is resisting New Line’s suggestion of filmmakers like Brad Peyton. New Line’s alternative would be re-fashion the film around Josh Hutcherson, who played Fraser’s character’s son in the original film. Such a move would save an eight-figure star salary, but it is a major risk to go without a star to return to a film that grossed $242 million worldwide.

Screenwriter Josh A. Cagan Discusses Bandslam

April 15th, 2010 by Paul Martin

Music-driven teen entertainment abounds on the small and large screen, but few endeavors have the heart and intelligence of last summer’s Bandslam, now available on DVD.

Penned by Josh A. Cagan and director Todd Graff, Bandslam received much critical acclaim. “What makes the film work is its feeling for the characters,” praised Roger Ebert, who gave the film 3 out of 4 stars. Ebert is not alone: Bandslam has a 90% approval rating from the industry’s Top Critics on RottenTomatoes.com.

Bandslam stars Vanessa Hudgens, Aly Michalka, Gaelan Connell, Lisa Kudrow and features a cameo from David Bowie.
